Soo curious about the mikan! Do you know if any tangerine type will do or is it something more specific? As always, thanks for sharing!

Oh I’m not sure, we have mikan in abundance since it’s the season, but I feel like any tangerine would be similar! I’m curious to know the results if you experiment 👀

How lovely. The flavours and sights of winter. Especially as I'm currently reading Days at the Morisaki Bookshop. The fragrances and flavours all fit the feel of the book.

Will do! I got so excited about the mikan I forgot to mention that I also love tusbaki. I love how it flowers through the winter and is an evergreen. There's many beautiful varieties in our village. I love how the flowering season is so long😍 they were my choice of plants for our new hedge ❤️

I still remember eating yaki imo in Mizugaura. It's a small fishing village on your (Shikoku) island with tiered gardens climbing hundreds of feet up the mountainside surrounding the village. Gardens so steep a scarecrow was was sitting in a chair rather than standing. ;-)

OK, just in case folks don't believe me, here's a picture of that scarecrow; https://www.ipernity.com/doc/319805/19990987

I am definitely an auditory person and I really enjoyed listening to this voiceover.

I’ve never tasted a roasted Mikan, there’s a first for everything!🍊

Thank you so much for that feedback. I also am an auditory person, so it’s nice to hear that you enjoyed it. I’m sure you can find it where you are living in Japan. Please try it if you have a chance!

Oh, to ward off winter with your roasted sweet potato and mikan to feel the hoka hoka...I must find a source for those Japanese yams

Love this. And so excited to try roasting mandarins like marshmallows 🍊

Expand full comment

Thank you so much! It’s a bit heavier than a marshmallow haha, but equally satisfying to roast! And you don’t have to worry about it becoming completely burnt 🍊

I shared this article with my boyfriend a few days ago, and today, out of the blue, he handed me a plate with warm mandarins that he had roasted in the oven. DELICIOUS! Thank you for sharing!

Love this so much! Tsubaki & robai are flowers which I've gotten to know only recently, from my tea ceremony practice & paying attention to what is blooming in my neighbourhood at the moment.

I had no idea you could roast mikan! Would love to taste them myself, that might be even more motivation to finally get a toaster (since I don't have an oven...). Thank you for this compilation!
