So lovely to hear your voice! I loved getting to listen as I read along. Thank you for sharing, Kana. Now off to roast some 'easy-peelers' in my oven...
First time reading and listening to your work, and discovering the roasted mikan at the end has me going straight to the green grocers to try this out!!!
I shared this article with my boyfriend a few days ago, and today, out of the blue, he handed me a plate with warm mandarins that he had roasted in the oven. DELICIOUS! Thank you for sharing!
I really enjoy your writing and insights on Japanese rural culture. I have repeatedly tried to become a paid subscriber but the substack form rejects my application with “ no such customer “ . I would like to support you as I look forward to receiving your Sunday morning gems . Perhaps I’m doing something incorrectly ?
Oh I’m not sure, we have mikan in abundance since it’s the season, but I feel like any tangerine would be similar! I’m curious to know the results if you experiment 👀
Hey Kana! Yesterday I tried Mikan with the mandarines we have here - what a surprising taste! It reminds me of orange tea, truly a stronger, less acid taste. Super cozy!
How lovely. The flavours and sights of winter. Especially as I'm currently reading Days at the Morisaki Bookshop. The fragrances and flavours all fit the feel of the book.
Will do! I got so excited about the mikan I forgot to mention that I also love tusbaki. I love how it flowers through the winter and is an evergreen. There's many beautiful varieties in our village. I love how the flowering season is so long😍 they were my choice of plants for our new hedge ❤️
I still remember eating yaki imo in Mizugaura. It's a small fishing village on your (Shikoku) island with tiered gardens climbing hundreds of feet up the mountainside surrounding the village. Gardens so steep a scarecrow was was sitting in a chair rather than standing. ;-)
How magical that your newsletter title says “wanna be wildflower”! Hope you get a chance to try some of these things! My partner is Dutch-speaking (from Belgium). I would love to be able to read your Dutch posts one day… 😅
Thank you so much for that feedback. I also am an auditory person, so it’s nice to hear that you enjoyed it. I’m sure you can find it where you are living in Japan. Please try it if you have a chance!

Please try it, Ethan!!! I am so curious to see how you experience it!
Thank you - this is a beautiful post.
Thank you so much for the kind comment, Debbie!
Thank you for this! I saw robai lots on a recent trip but didn’t know what it is called - now I know!
Did you get a chance to smell it?!

Soo curious about the mikan! Do you know if any tangerine type will do or is it something more specific? As always, thanks for sharing!

OK, just in case folks don't believe me, here's a picture of that scarecrow; https://www.ipernity.com/doc/319805/19990987

Such a good snack. I like that the title of the photo is “Lazy Scarecrow” haha!
Roasted a blood orange in the oven this morning - what a gift! Never realized this was possible. Thank you 😋🧡
